You might think, well, I'm sure that's a bit of an exaggeration. It isn't.
Although he is incredibly strong-willed and brave, fun is a foreign word to him; he is completely obsessed with carrying out his duty to the greatest possible extent. Outside of his work, he doesn't often socialize, and due to this, he's often distrustful and withdrawn. Although he tends to push others away from him, to prevent them from getting too close, his dark determination and intelligence can be somewhat attractive.

Puphood: Take a glance at Verge and you'll think, oh, he's boring. Ordinary. Plain. Think again. As a pup, he grew up with fairly standard education and upbringing. He was born with two sisters and lived happily for many moons with caring parents and friendly siblings- before the blizzard. His mother had been out, only god knows doing what, when a horrible blizzard suddenly erupted, bearing down upon their territory for hours until it let up. It was nothing out of the ordinary, really; living in their sort of environment, the Pack of Frost is often battered by deadly storms such as these. However, most of the time, wolves are able to see snowstorms coming from miles away and get back to the safety of the cave up to an hour before they strike.
Who knows what she was doing when it hit? Perhaps she had been trapped in some god-forsaken hole, unable to get out before the blizzard hit. All they knew for sure was that when Verge's father went out looking for her after the storm, her body was already cold- frozen, in fact. Slowly, like magnets losing their attraction to one another, their family broke apart. Verge's gentle, caring mother had been the glue that held them together, and as soon as the glue was melted, they fell apart.
Wolfhood: Lonely and miserable, Verge grew quiet and dull-eyed over the moons. One of his sisters, unsocial and depressed like him, left to join the Pack of Shadows. His father didn't seem bothered much by her or her mother's loss, but he seemed strangely interested in Verge's beautiful second sister. One morning, she came to talk to Verge- which made him immediately suspicious, as she hardly ever glanced twice at him; and when she did, she was looking down her nose- and told him through tears and whimpers that their father tried to take advantage of her the night before.
Enraged, Verge confronted his father. He didn't much like his sister anymore, but the mere image of his father making a pass at his own daughter was infuriating to him. Over a long, increasingly hostile argument, Verge backed his father up against the edge of a ravine, and through a slip of the paw and a snarl of vengeance, his father fell to his death.
Horrified and miserable, Verge returned to his pack with his tail low and his ears drooping. His sister blamed him for their father's death, and after no more than a single melt, she left to join the Pack of Shadows and reunite with her sister, leaving Verge alone and grief-stricken. Over the moons, he grew hard and unsocial, and to present day, his face has not been lit by a smile since. Sure, he had friends- but few. Very few. and Sure, he had family- but distant. Very distant. You could say that he came out of his depression stronger than ever, or you could say that he came out more hollow than ever.
